More About Tom

Personal Background

After three years of undergraduate study at the University of Illinois, I joined the US Navy, serving with the Seabees in South Vietnam in 1966. As Civic Action Coordinator, I was responsible for medical, dental, and construction assistance delivered to the local people.

After the Navy, I graduated from URI and married my East Providence Sweetheart. We began our life and family together in Rhode Island. My first job was teaching students at the West Bay Technical Center. Later, as Environmental Education Director at URI's W. Alton Jones Campus, I enjoyed creating "Outdoor Adventures in Learning" for thousands of students and adults each year.

With careers in teaching, physical therapy, and occupational therapy, my three daughters have dedicated themselves to making the world a better place. My three grandchildren send me a message each day that life is a priceless gift to cherish and share. They also challenge me never lose my sense of wonder.

I grew up on the South Side of Chicago in a Polish community. Worked in the steel mills. Was raised by a single Mom who worked for the Illinois Central Railroad. I graduated from an all boys, college prep high school, Mt. Carmel. It's also true, I did serve proudly as an altar boy at Immaculate Conception Church for many years.

Hiking in the White Mts, walking on Second Beach. biking on Ocean Drive, and gardening in Hope Valley are a few  of the simples pleasures in my life.

Professional

Career Endeavors:  executive recruiting and placement (aka headhunting) was my next career adventure after leaving W. Alton Jones Campus. Engineering, marketing, product management, and technical supportfor the datacom and telecom boom of the 1980's  were my specialties for the next seventeen years. Right place; right time.

In 2002, at the bottom of the dot com crash, I began my new adventure in the challenging world of financial services. The "Lost Decade" in the stock market had begun in 2000. With the market down 48% in 2002 , retirement plans for many were cancled, on hold, uncertain. at best.

Driving force:  empowering individuals and families to protect their hopes, dreams and lifestyles is the ultimate source of energy that drives my work. To make a positive difference in the lives of those I serve is what drives it all. In fact, that has always been the force - from teaching in a high school to directing an environmental education center; from recruiting in the datacom-telecom to delivering medical & construction assistance to Vietnamese villagers - the desire to make a difference in people's lives.

Licenses: Insurance: life, health, long term care, income annuities.

Professional development:  continuing education is a must in the financial services industry. Workshops, seminars, webinars that focus on the latest and best ideas, strategies, and resources are an on-going and exciting part of my professional development. Continuing education courses are also required for licensing and product training.

Education:  M.A. University of Rhode Island. Graduate and undergraduate courses at the Providence College, Rhode Island College, University of Illinois
